The Client and Their Brief

Neal’s Yard Remedies are a cosmetic and skin care retailer based in Covent Garden, London and Peacemarsh, Dorset. We have worked with Neal’s Yard for many years, producing their skin care and cosmetic photography for brochures, in-store POS, social content and their website. The images below were part of a larger project to produce visual assets that showcased their products in a ‘clean and fresh’ and ‘minimalist’ style. The central mission was to get the products front and centre, no distractions. The rejuvenating Frankincense products are regarded as classics amongst their product lineup, so photographically we had to ensure we did’t drift away from the brief too much. Other parts of the brief had different requirements. The luxury range of frankincense products for example had a similar un-cluttered approach, but with more contrast in the lighting, so keeping these bright was a main objective.

What We Did

From a practical point go view, shooting products on an off-white background is simple! However there is a real art in elevating the imagery to a place suitable for an international cosmetics brand. The overarching creative direction called for a minimal aesthetic. During pre production we discussed uncluttered compositions, emphasis on space around the products, and a tactile nature to the textures. The lighting needed to be bright and soft, without losing depth. We were mindful to make the materials of the bottles and jars true to life to attain that tactile element, so even under the soft light the glossy liquids, glass and caps reflected nice sharp white light. The shadows are quite long, but light enough as to not take your eye. We thought was a good balance between three dimensional shots with lots of depth, and good classic commercial cosmetic photography.

Texture Styling

This part of the brief required a product texture stylist to showcase the luxurious nature of the moisturisers, oils, creams and serums. Given the minimalist style we knew we needed to add strength here, so we emailed texture stylist extraordinare Tiffany Rine. Tiffany. Has a lot of experience with cosmetics brands and we knew she would knock it out of the park!

How It Looks

The Results

Visually the images put the products front and centre. High resolution, punchy blue bottles and playful textures that scream luxury. We delivered these assets as full bleed frames. This gives the Neal’s Yard design team lots of space to work into for all of their marketing materials. It’s important that photographic assets are versatile for websites, social channels, design layups etc. Adding product textures to these product shots was a fantastic way to elevate these images.
